About The Artist

Born in Dungannon in 1977, Dominic McNamee is a multidisciplinary artist. He uses Photography, video and sound in his personal practice. It was on a visit to New York in 2010 that Dominic’s interest in Photography was piqued. One of his friends accompanying him on the trip was a Photographer who generously let Dominic have his first hands-on experience with a high end DSLR, on returning from America his friend, having seen Dominic’s own images from the holiday on social media commented that he had a particular documentary style of taking photographs. This friend then encouraged him further to purchase a refurbished DSLR, which Dominic duly heeded.

In 2018 after 13 years as a Production Designer for a newspaper group Dominic was made redundant, unemployed and with no formal 3rd level qualification, he considered returning to education. Encouraged by his brother he enrolled in the HNC Photography course at Belfast Met. His education changed this perception of photography as an art form, and he excelled with distinction in modules relating to Visual Narratives, Contextual Studies and Communication in Art and Design.

Dominic then enrolled on the BA Photography Course at Ulster University. Encouraged by the chance to study under such respected practitioners as Donovan Wylie, Ken Grant, Ailbhe Greaney, Frederic Huska, and Clare Gallagher, whose works he had studied and admired. Over the past 3 years he has used this education under such expert tutelage to developed his practice even further, again excelling in and developing his understanding of photography as a means of conversation and engagement. He has embraced new narrative strategies such as video, sound and performance.
