My Beloved Solitude
My Beloved Solitude is a contemplative series of reflective imagery exploring my desire to seek sanctuary through the act of solitude and the joy I take from being alone. I use the medium of photography and the research I accompany it with to look deeper into the anthropological conditions of self and how I relate to my environment. What is it that drives us to seek solace in our own thoughts?
Through my work I attempt to look at not the collective aspects of humanity, but more my own curiosities, what are the external conditions that drive us to think, act and behave the way we do and conversely why do I personally behave in such a way. Why am I driven to seek my own company and how does that reflect the context in which others do so also. For such a social animal we tend to create works of art, literature and poetry which explore these aspects and often celebrate them.
My images are made in forested areas, local to me. I have become quite adept at knowing the right times to go to almost guarantee that I am alone, or at least feel as though I am. I make a point of straying off the beaten pathways, the desire lines and open areas and explore deeper into the trees as I can, perhaps a metaphor for my deeper exploration into my own thinking. I am using light to represent the point of solitude, the place where I feel truly alone and content. I capture it, then I move on to the next. My intention is to create immersive work, evocative and engaging.
